Reading Workshop We begin our reading workshop with a mini lesson on a reading strategy or a reading skill. Students are then given a choice of; Read to Self, Read to Someone, Work on Words, or Write. Each student must do Read to Self everyday. During this time I do individual conferences and teach specific skills, check how students are applying the skill taught that day, and check on reading progress. Students are reading just right books at this time (books they can read with 95-99% accuracy). During this time I also will pull together students who need more targeted work on specific skills. 9-12-2011 - This week we are reviewing the 5 finger rule for choosing a just right book and the IPICK rules for choosing a book. I-I get to choose, P-purpose, why am I reading it, I-interest, do I like the book, C-comprehension, do I understand the book, K-know most the words. We are also talking about previewing a book by reading the title, looking at the pictures, reading the jacket or back cover, and doing a five finger test. |
Writing Workshop 9-12-2011 - This week in writing we are thinking about where writers get their ideas for stories. Students drew pictures or wrote words to spark their memory about what they could write about. We have done some initial writing so that I can get an idea about what skills the students have and where to go next in my teaching. We will also be doing a spelling assessment to get an idea which spelling patterns the students have already mastered and which they need to learn. |
